Amid the ongoing political slugfest in Rajasthan, chorus grows in the Congress for Rahul Gandhi to take over as the party president. In a virtual meeting with Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday, many party MPs expressed their desire for Rahul’s return as the party president.

The Daily Guardian has learnt from its sources that senior Congress leader and newly elected MP, Digvijay Singh has demanded that Rahul Gandhi should be made the party president. Singh’s demand was supported by many other MPs present in the meeting.

While putting forward his suggestions, Digvijay Singh said, “Rahul should lead the party as a president as we have seen him taking a stand on various issues against the current government.” Apart from other MPs, Congress’ General Secretary (Organisation) and newly elected RS MP K.C. Venugopal also praised Rahul for taking lead in cornering the govt in issues like Covid-19.

The meeting had been called by Sonia Gandhi to discuss the current political situation and the impact of Covid-19 pandemic across the country. Sonia Gandhi had called a similar meeting with party’s Lok Sabha MPs on July 11. The demand for Rahul’s return as Congress president had come up in that meeting also.

In May last year, Rahul Gandhi had resigned as the party president after taking moral responsibility for the party’s massive defeat in 2019 general elections.
