Theodoros Benakis writes in European Interest that China’s genocidal campaign against the Uyghurs, an ethnic Turkish group who live in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, has entered a new phase as the Wumao army, also known as the “50 Cent Army,” insults Islam and unleashes blasphemy against the Prophet.

The Wumao Army, a group of state-backed internet commentators, is frequently observed injuring the religious feelings of Uyghurs on social media. Despite PRC’s close ties to conservative Muslim nations like Pakistan, Indonesia, and the Arab Peninsula, social media frequently portrays Muslims as radicals and terrorists. China is currently using Islamophobia, the most denounced misinformation in western media, to discriminate against and isolate Muslims and generate support for policies adopted by the Chinese population in Xinjiang.

The author claims that the Wumao Army blasphemes against the Prophet and degrades Islam through social media posts.

Unchecked Islamophobic trolls have gone too far, and some of the comments expressed by this group of users would have sparked public outrage in any other region of the world.

The Weibo Army promotes hate speech against Muslims, insults Islam, and justifies Beijing’s prejudice as a means of helping the regime in Xinjiang.

After the Charlie Hebdo tragedy in 2015, one user made it quite obvious that “Religion and ethnicity are unrelated. The religious and racial policies of our nation are 108,000 miles apart. Nobody mandates that a specific ethnic group must adhere to a particular religion.”

Islamophobia is allegedly used inadvertently in Xinjiang and on the mainland to support Xi Jinping’s new Chinese cultural policy. This was recently revealed by Muslims in China. European Interest noted that Chinese citizens use Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, to defend rejecting Islam.

Many Chinese civilians have endorsed the new cultural policy wholeheartedly and concurred with the plan to exterminate the Uyghur Muslims from Xinjiang.

Muslims in China conducted a month-long investigation into this new online social behaviour and discovered that Wumao 50 Cent Army members were the ones who most frequently introduced Islamophobia. This organisation reads the Quran and the Hadees and gives them a negative interpretation.

Then, misinterpreted references are added to the content and posted on Weibo to encourage people to perceive Islam negatively.

Only the Han population should call China their homeland, according to the Chinese Communist Party. Having won a third term, Chinese President Xi Jinping is employing every strategy at his disposal to realise his bleak and straightforward vision of “a unified China inhabited by a unified people.”

At a two-day party conference in September 2020, the Chinese President reiterated his support for Beijing’s policies in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

“Practice has proven that the party’s strategy for governing Xinjiang in the new era is completely correct,” said Xi.

A Chinese board with the following words was seen earlier in 2018 at the school’s entrance in Turpan, a city in Xinjiang with a mainly Uyghur population “You are now on school property. Please use Guoyu, which is Mandarin Chinese and is known as “the national language” [that is, Mandarin Chinese].”

According to European Interest, a “culture genocide” policy is being implemented.

The Uyghurs are subject to a quasi-total system of discrimination, which includes incarceration, economic isolation, and restrictions on their right to practise their religion. The death penalty is used as punishment in several situations.

Regarding religion, the government enforces dress standards that forbid males from growing beards and women from covering their faces. University students and factory workers are likewise prohibited from fasting during Ramadan. Mosques are routinely destroyed. The only Quran that is permitted is one that has been authorised by the state.

According to the European Interest Report, a brutal programme that separates children from their mothers and places them in state institutions or with Chinese families targets Uyghur families.
