Pete Hegseth met Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to discuss security. He said “deterrence is necessary” due to growing threats and reaffirmed the US commitment to the Mutual Defense Treaty. His visit to the Philippines and Japan highlights Washington’s continued security presence in Asia, despite concerns over Donald Trump’s “America First” policy.

China has been more aggressive in the South China Sea, using water cannons and naval maneuvers to block Philippine vessels. Chinese aircraft have also approached Philippine patrol planes near Scarborough Shoal. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan also claim parts of these vital trade waters.
Marcos praised U.S. support, stating that Pete Hegseth’s visit “sends a strong message” about ongoing cooperation. He called the US “the greatest force for peace” in the region.
Rising Tensions and Military Exercises
Ahead of Pete Hegseth’s visit, China criticized US – Philippines military ties. Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian warned that such cooperation “must not harm regional peace and stability.” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun called the U.S. “a predator” with a history of abandoning allies.
Despite Beijing’s warnings, US and Philippine forces will hold their largest joint combat exercises, “Balikatan,” next month. These drills, including live-fire exercises, have increasingly taken place near disputed waters.
Pete Hegseth, despite controversy over texting military plans to a private Signal group, remained composed. He joined American and Filipino troops for physical training, posing for photos in casual attire, reinforcing camaraderie between the allies.
As tensions rise in the South China Sea, the US continues to emphasize deterrence and security. With growing US – Philippines military ties, the situation remains a focal point in US – China relations.
