According to media reports, the capital police in Pakistan has requested the blocking of over 100 social media accounts that were found to be promoting sectarianism, anti-state sentiments, terrorism, and anti-Islam activities.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has taken action to block a total of 106 accounts on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube based on the police officers’ recommendation. The decision was made following the findings of the Provisional Violent Extremism Unit (PVE) within the capital police’s Counterterrorism Department (CTD).
The PVE is actively monitoring the social media accounts of individuals engaged in various illegal activities, including sectarianism, anti-state sentiments, terrorism, and anti-Islam content. So far, the unit has identified 203 accounts to be blocked, out of which 164 are on Twitter, 38 are on Facebook, and one is on YouTube.
As per the media report, the Counterterrorism Department sent separate requests to the FIA, providing detailed information and screenshots of the illegal activities associated with each account, in order to initiate their closure.
