China’s foreign ministry issued a stark statement on Tuesday urging the international community to strengthen the WHO, not weaken it. It was her answer to U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that the United States would withdraw from the agency, thus setting into motion globe-encircling discussions about the future of international health governance.

Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun further underscored the importance of global cooperation in all efforts to address health challenges and reiterated commitment to China’s support for WHO’s critical role in global crises. China’s stance indicates that there should be still cooperation to ensure a well-coordinated global response to health issues.

“The role of the WHO should only be strengthened, not weakened,” foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said. “China will, as always, support the WHO in fulfilling its responsibilities… and work towards building a shared community of health for humanity” he added.
