China Supports India Against Trump’s 50% Tariff Threats, ‘…The Bully’

China’s Ambassador to India Xu Feihong stated that India has the full support of China against the US tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration. Xu called Washington a ‘bully’. The Trump administration slapped India with an additional 25% tariff, after India continued to purchase Russian crude oil.

Xu asserted that China stands tall with India in defending the multilateral trading system as the US puts pressure by increasing tariff rates. “The United States has imposed tariffs of up to 50 per cent on India, and it has even threatened to impose more. China firmly opposes this,” Xu stated at an event on Thursday, while speaking on the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. PM Modi is expected to attend the high-level meeting.

He added, “China will firmly stand with India to uphold the multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organization at its core.”

The statement comes when India and China are trying to reiterate bilateral ties. The two countries decided to explore the demarcation of their disputed border when Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited India this week. This visit marks his first in many years.

Wang Yi met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and called for better cooperation amid Washington’s bullying and global trade challenges. Jaishankar hinted that both countries seek renewed relations.
