The US intelligence community has identified China as the most significant and wide-ranging threat to US national security. The Annual Threat Assessment, released on March 25, highlights Beijing’s military advancements, cyber operations, and global influence campaigns. The report warns that China is steadily enhancing its capabilities to challenge US interests, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

Cyber Operations and Global Influence

The report underscores China’s expanding use of cyber operations and influence campaigns to undermine US security. Beijing is expected to continue its “coercive and subversive” activities, targeting both domestic US institutions and international partnerships.

Chinese officials believe the US is leading a global effort to tarnish China’s image and weaken the ruling Communist Party. In response, Beijing is ramping up cyber espionage, disinformation efforts, and diplomatic maneuvers to counter perceived threats to its power.

China’s Taiwan Strategy and Military Ambitions

China is making “steady but uneven” progress in building military capabilities to take control of Taiwan. The report states that Beijing is preparing to challenge US military operations in the Pacific and is increasing pressure on Taiwan through military drills and economic coercion.

However, US intelligence agencies believe China remains cautious, opting to manage tensions with Washington while solidifying its long-term strategic position. The report also highlights internal vulnerabilities within China, including President Xi Jinping’s centralized leadership approach, which may hinder Beijing’s ability to address domestic and international challenges effectively.

China Rejects US Intelligence Claims

In response to the report, China dismissed the findings as “irresponsible and biased.” Foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated that Beijing has no intention of surpassing or replacing the US. Meanwhile, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard reaffirmed the assessment, calling China “our most capable strategic competitor.”

Beyond China, the report also identifies threats from Russia, Iran, North Korea, and non-state actors, including transnational criminal organizations and extremist groups. As global tensions rise, US intelligence agencies warn of increasing security challenges in the coming years.
