Taiwan Begins Search For Chinese Nationals
According to a report from Taiwan’s newspaper, inspections are planned to begin to investigate the issue of military personnel, educators and other officials possessing Chinese citizenship or any other connection to the nation, which is considered an offence in Taiwan.
As per Article 9-1 of Taiwan’s Cross-Strait Act, Taiwan nationals are not permitted to hold a Chinese passport or household registration. People holding a Chinese passport or having household registration in China are prohibited from exercising their right to election, recall, initiative, referendum, serving in military service or public offices, among others. This is a move to strengthen Taiwan’s security and control any efforts made to promote Chinese interests in Taiwan via the Chinese Unified Front.
The inspection to search for any military or public official holding a Chinese passport or household registration is reported to begin on 1st January 2026.
