A recent demonstration by the Chinese military, showcasing robot dogs equipped with machine guns, has captured significant global attention. This showcase unfolded during the largest-ever joint military exercise between China and Cambodia, dubbed “Golden Dragon,” as reported by Agence France-Presse.
The “Golden Dragon” exercise aimed to bolster military cooperation between China and Cambodia through the display of state-of-the-art technology and contemporary fighting techniques, according to Futurism. Among the attractions were quadrupedal robots, colloquially referred to as “robodogs,” armed with machine guns mounted on their backs. However, despite their armament, these robots did not demonstrate the use of their weapons during the exercise. Instead, military officers showcased the robodogs’ mobility and potential utility in future combat scenarios, observed by attending journalists.
While the “Golden Dragon” drill sought to underscore military collaboration and technological prowess, the presence of armed robotic dogs raised ethical concerns and sparked international discussions. The inclusion of these robots with offensive capabilities underscores the evolving landscape of warfare and the integration of autonomous technologies into military strategies.
The utilization of armed robotic dogs is not unique to China. The Pentagon previously announced plans to equip remote-controlled robot dogs with sophisticated weaponry as part of ongoing military experiments, per Futurism. US military contractor Ghost Robotics has showcased a robotic dog armed with long-range weapons, aligning with broader efforts to incorporate autonomous technologies into US military operations.
In the midst of these developments, robotics companies are taking a stance on the weaponization of their products. Boston Dynamics, renowned for its Spot Mini robot dog, has explicitly stated its opposition to weaponizing its robots for military purposes. In a public statement, the company affirmed its commitment to refrain from equipping its advanced-mobility robots with firearms, emphasizing ethical considerations and adherence to company policies.
