During an operation in the Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, police reported that they seized 500 kg of illegal goods worth Rs 1.25 crore and detained two people in accordance with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
According to Mahasamund, Superintendent of Police (SP) Dharmendra Singh, a police team stopped a truck inside the boundaries of Singhod police station after receiving a tip. They found contraband inside the truck. The SP stated that the suspects were reportedly engaged in cannabis sales.
500 kilogrammes of cannabis were found by the police during the search, the officer claimed, adding that the haul was worth about Rs 1.25 crore.
Ramkumar Shahshankar and Sudhir Kumar Yadav, both Delhi residents, were named as the defendants.
During interrogation, the duo revealed that they were cab drivers and suffered loss at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic following which they entered this illegal business.
“The accused persons were taking the cannabis to Raipur and a probe in this connection is underway,” the official added.
Police have registered a case against the duo under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
“Further probe is underway,” the officer added.
