A day following a tragic incident in which one laborer lost his life, and two others were injured due to the collapse of two connected booths during renovation work near the Terraced Garden in Sector 33, the police have taken legal action against the owner of the booths, his tenant, and the contractor responsible for the renovation.
The contractor, identified as Surender Singh, also known as Gaurav, aged 30 and residing in Sector 35, along with the tenant named Aayush, aged 24 and residing in Sector 32, was arrested but later released on bail. These individuals, in addition to the owner of the booths, GS Sidhu residing in Sector 21, have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. The charges include Sections 336 (for actions endangering the lives or personal safety of others), 337 (for causing harm through actions endangering the lives or personal safety of others), 304-A (for causing death due to negligence), and 34 (for actions done collectively with a common intention).
The background of the incident reveals that Booth Numbers 9 and 10, formerly housing a liquor vend, were in the process of being transformed into a coffee shop by Aayush, who had taken the booths on lease. The tragic incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Wednesday when the concrete roof and walls unexpectedly collapsed, trapping three laborers.
Arun Tiwari and Chote Lal, two of the laborers, were successfully rescued from the debris. However, Manchan Kumar, aged 24, was tragically buried beneath the rubble, and an iron rod had also pierced his head. All three victims were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32, where Kumar was unfortunately declared deceased.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the renovation work was carried out without adequate measures to secure the walls and roof of the booths, leading to their sudden collapse, according to the police officials
