New AI Model: Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B
The newly unveiled AI model, named Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B, features 4 billion parameters and is intended for businesses to create their own AI solutions. The model was refined and trained using a combination of authentic Hindi data, synthetic Hindi data, and an equal portion of English data.
Tech Mahindra’s Custom AI Development
Tech Mahindra, an Indian IT services and consulting firm, will be the first to implement Nvidia’s technology by developing a custom AI model called Indus 2.0. This model will focus on Hindi and its numerous dialects.
Linguistic Diversity in India
In India, only about 10% of the 1.4 billion population speaks English, while the constitution recognizes 22 different languages. This diversity has prompted both large companies and startups to develop AI models tailored to local languages, enhancing consumer engagement and facilitating tasks such as customer service AI assistants and content translation.

Small Language Models vs. Large Language Models
Unlike large language models, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 used in ChatGPT, small language models are trained on narrower, more specific datasets. They are generally less expensive, making them appealing to companies with limited resources.
Global Investment in India’s Semiconductor Industry
As global chip manufacturers invest in India and establish facilities, the country is working to bolster its semiconductor industry and compete with major hubs like Taiwan. However, analysts suggest that this development may take years. Nvidia has been active in India for nearly 20 years, operating engineering and design centers, as well as offices in major cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
