In response to the prevailing drought conditions exacerbated by a rainfall deficit in parts of the state, a delegation from the Central government conducted a visit to Pune on Tuesday to assess the severity of losses experienced by farmers. Led by Priya Ranjan, the additional secretary of the agricultural department, the contingent will tour drought-affected regions and engage with farmers during their assessment.
Addressing the situation, Ranjan stated, “The team will explore drought-prone areas and engage with farmers, elected representatives, and officials to seek solutions and provide relief to the affected citizens.” He acknowledged the adverse effects on crops and a significant decline in groundwater levels due to scanty rainfall and extended gaps between rainy days.
During the visit, Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao briefed the Central team on the drought situation in the Pune division. Rao highlighted that Pune and Solapur districts were the most severely impacted, with approximately 75 critically affected areas in Pune district and around 100 in Solapur district.
Hemant Vasekar, the Animal Husbandry Commissioner of Maharashtra, emphasized the critical condition of cattle feed in the state.
He noted, “The situation for cattle feed in Maharashtra is critical. Across the state, 40 talukas face challenges for animals, with a total of 59.64 lakh cattle. Adequate measures, including 396 metric tonnes of fodder and significant water arrangements, will be necessary for these cattle.”
District collectors from drought-prone areas participated in the review meeting via video conferencing, providing insights into the on-the-ground situation.
