Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday that the government is examining the Supreme Court’s verdict on the appointment of the chief election commissioner (CEC) and election commissioners and will take “appropriate action” on it.
In a written response, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that until Parliament passes legislation in accordance with Article 342(2) of the Constitution, the appointment of the CEC and election commissioners will be based on the recommendations of a three-member committee comprised of the prime minister, chief justice of India, and leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, and if no LoP is available, the leader of the single largest party.”
