The CBI on Thursday filed a charge-sheet over the alleged murder of BJP activist Abhijit Sarkar in the post-poll violence in West Bengal. The charge-sheet is against 20 people. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths filed the charge-sheet in the Sealdah court on Thursday. Sources said that Abhijit Sarkar’s mother’s statement was taken.

The day after counting of votes in West Bengal, BJP activist Abhijit Sarkar, a resident of Beleghata, died, after being attacked in a gruesome manner allegedly by political activists belonging to the state’s ruling party. His body was not cremated for the sake of investigation. After 138 days, the family got permission for the funeral. His family has claimed from the outset that Sarkar had been killed by Trinamool Congress workers for being a BJP activist. At the same time, the family of the deceased also questioned the role of the police in the incident.

Recently, Sarkar’s brother Biswajit went to the CBI office with Abhijit Sarkar’s mobile phone. According to Biswajit, Abhijit had probably realized that he could be killed; that’s why, Biswajit thinks, Abhijit hid his mobile phone. According to sources, there are several videos on the mobile phone of the moment before Abhijit Sarkar’s death. Biswajit thinks these can be used by investigators. He recently appeared at the CBI office with those videos.

CBI investigators have spoken to Abhijit’s grandfather Biswajit Sarkar more than once since the CBI took over the investigation. They have even visited Biswajit’s house. Biswajit himself has appeared in Nizam Palace or CGO complex again.

On 5 September, CBI officials went to Abhijit Sarkar’s house. Sarkar’s body had been lying in the morgue for several months. After seeing the DNA report, Abhijit’s brother arranged for his brother’s shraddha. The family has alleged that the police had an active role in covering up the case. However, after receiving the DNA report, Abhijit’s grandfather Biswajit Sarkar cremated the body. The family members had earlier promised that the fight would continue till the accused were punished. The case caused a lot of stir because of the gruesome manner in which Abhijit Sarkar was killed.
