MUMBAI: In 2022, heart diseases were responsible for 25% of deaths in Mumbai, according to data from the civic health department on World Heart Day. The BMC recorded 94,500 deaths in the city that year, and heart-related complications were the leading cause. Around 23,000 cardiovascular deaths occurred in 2022, with approximately 17,000 attributed to ischemic heart disease or heart attacks. A high prevalence of hypertension, often caused by excessive salt consumption, contributes to heart diseases. The BMC has been actively promoting a healthier lifestyle, including dietary counseling and yoga programs.
