Canadian police detained three protesters on Monday following demonstrations against recent attacks on Hindu temples by alleged Khalistani supporters. The arrests were made near the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, where members of the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) had gathered to voice opposition to what they termed “Khalistani intimidation” and “anti-Hindu hatred.”
Arrests and Police Response
The Peel Regional Police confirmed that three individuals were arrested during the protests and taken to different locations within Mississauga. According to the police statement, the charges stem from alleged criminal activities during the protests. Ongoing investigations are being led by the 21 Division and 12 Division Criminal Investigation Bureaus.
“Peel Regional Police were present at a demonstration held at a place of worship in Brampton… As a result, three individuals have been arrested and criminally charged,” read the police statement.
Protests Target Temples in Brampton and Surrey
The demonstrations were organized by CoHNA at two major temples: the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton and the Laxmi Narayan Temple in Surrey. Protesters rallied to express their concern over rising incidents of alleged “anti-Hindu” sentiments and to call for action against Khalistani influence, which they argue has led to increased threats and violence against Hindu communities.
India Condemns Attack on Hindu Sabha Mandir
Following reports of intimidation at Hindu places of worship, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) voiced strong concern over the safety of Indian nationals and Hindu establishments in Canada. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal issued a statement urging the Canadian government to ensure the protection of all places of worship and to hold perpetrators accountable.
“We condemn the acts of violence perpetrated by extremists and separatists at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton… We also expect that those indulging in violence will be prosecuted,” Jaiswal stated.
Growing Diplomatic Concerns
The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding sectarian tensions in Canada, particularly in light of the Canadian government’s stance on freedom of speech versus security concerns. The Indian government has called for swift action, urging Canada to take proactive steps to prevent similar incidents in the future and to assure the safety of all communities.
