The resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has sparked discussions about the future of international students, particularly Indian students, who have been significant beneficiaries of his liberal immigration policies.
During Trudeau’s tenure from 2015 to 2023, Canada saw a surge in Indian students. According to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data, 1.3 million Indian students received educational permits during this period. The number of Indian students with study permits rose from 31,920 in 2015 (14.5% of international students) to 278,250 in 2023 (40.7%).
Recent Changes in Canada’s Immigration Policies
In recent years, the Canadian government has introduced caps on international students and stricter study permit requirements. This has led to a 4% decline in Indian students obtaining permits in 2024.
As reported by The Times of India, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, who is likely to succeed Trudeau, has criticized the current immigration system. Poilievre has pledged to prioritize Canadians for employment over foreign workers and tie immigration policies to job availability, housing, and healthcare. These changes could make it more challenging for Indian students to secure study permits or transition to permanent residency.
Expert Opinions on Immigration Policy Changes
While these developments raise concerns, some experts believe the changes could have positive aspects. Tirath Singh, an immigration consultant from Jalandhar’s Pinnacle Immigration, shared with The Indian Express:
“The recent changes aim to attract serious students who come to study and work in fields Canada requires. For those with genuine intentions, these policies provide stability and long-term opportunities.”
Singh also highlighted Canada’s reliance on migrants to sustain its economy, suggesting that the country will continue to welcome skilled and genuine immigrants.
What Lies Ahead for Indian Students
The proposed immigration reforms under Poilievre may reshape the landscape for Indian students and immigrants. Although challenges are expected, those with clear academic and professional goals may still find opportunities in Canada.
With Canada’s next leader anticipated by March 2025, Indian students should stay informed about potential policy shifts and adapt their plans accordingly.
