Jagmeet Singh Slams Trump’s Annexation Proposal: ‘Canada is Not for Sale’

Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), has firmly warned US President-elect Donald Trump against his comments about annexing Canada. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Singh stated, “I have a message for Donald Trump. Our country (Canada) is not for sale. Not now, not ever.”

Canadians Stand Firm

Furthermore, Singh expressed immense pride in Canada and its people. He emphasized, “Canadians are proud people, proud of our country, and ready to fight like hell to defend it.” Additionally, he highlighted Canada’s role as a supportive neighbor, noting how Canadian firefighters assisted with the Los Angeles wildfires. “Right now, with the forest fires ravaging homes, Canadian firefighters showed up. That is who we are. We show up and support our neighbors,” Singh added.

Retaliation on Tariffs

In response to Trump’s potential actions, Singh warned that Canada would retaliate if tariffs were imposed. “If Donald Trump thinks, if you think you can pick a fight with us, there will be a price to pay. I have committed that if Donald Trump imposes tariffs on us, we should respond with retaliatory tariffs in kind,” Singh stated.

Trump’s Proposal for Canada

Trump has consistently discussed the idea of making Canada the 51st US state. In December, he posted on Truth Social, “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State.” He further argued, “Their taxes would be cut by more than 60 per cent, their businesses would immediately double in size, and they would be militarily protected like no other country anywhere in the World.”

Trump’s Merger Plan

Following Justin Trudeau’s resignation, Trump reiterated the idea of a merger. He suggested, “If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”

Trudeau’s Strong Response

However, Justin Trudeau swiftly rejected Trump’s proposal. He firmly stated, “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.” This response highlighted Canada’s continued sovereignty and independence.

Singh’s Clear Message

Overall, Singh’s comments serve as a clear signal that Canada will defend its independence. His statements, along with Trudeau’s earlier remarks, further reinforce the country’s commitment to its sovereignty despite Trump’s controversial proposals.
