Francois-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, has announced that he will not participate in the Liberal Party leadership race. Calling it a difficult decision, Champagne expressed his gratitude to Canadians and his commitment to the country’s future.
In a post shared on X, Champagne said,
“I won’t be seeking the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada in the upcoming race. A difficult decision but one I take with Canada at heart. Thanks to Canadians, colleagues, and organizers from across the country who share the vision of a proud, ambitious, and prosperous Canada.”
Champagne’s announcement comes shortly after Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly also opted out of the race. Joly cited the need to focus on international challenges, including economic pressures and tariff threats from the incoming US President, Donald Trump.
These developments follow Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent declaration that he would resign as the Liberal Party leader and Prime Minister once a suitable successor is found. Trudeau highlighted prolonged parliamentary gridlock as a key factor in his decision.
Speaking about his decision, Trudeau said:
“We have worked for this country. Despite our best efforts, Parliament has been paralyzed for months. I have asked the Liberal Party President to begin the search for a new Prime Ministerial candidate.”
He also advised the Governor General to prorogue Parliament until March 24, signaling a reset for Canadian politics.
Trudeau emphasized the urgency of addressing the nation’s challenges and ensuring continuity in leadership. He expressed deep care for Canada, stating:
“Canadian resilience motivates me to serve. I will always be guided by what is in the best interest of Canadians.”
