Late on Friday night, Chandigarh Police apprehended a 26-year-old cab driver, Sukhpreet Singh, recovering approximately 11.52 grams of heroin from his possession.
Sukhpreet, hailing from Punjab’s Moga district, had been purportedly trafficking drugs for months while operating as a taxi driver. Presented before a local court on Saturday, he was remanded to police custody for further interrogation to dismantle his supply network.
A Class 12 graduate, Sukhpreet had been driving a cab in the Tricity area for the past two years. The arrest occurred during routine patrolling conducted by the District Crime Cell, Sector 24.
The arrest unfolded when a police team near the electricity board in Sector 32-A observed Sukhpreet carrying a bag from the GMCH-32 side. Upon spotting the police, he attempted to flee but was pursued and apprehended.
Subsequent scrutiny of Sukhpreet’s bag uncovered 11.52 grams of heroin, leading to his arrest. During interrogation by ASI Rajesh Kumar, Sukhpreet admitted to six months of drug involvement. He confessed to sourcing heroin from various parts of Punjab and distributing it in the Tricity, using the proceeds for daily expenses. The case was registered at the Sector 34 police station.
“He disclosed that his cab was utilized for drug distribution despite his official role as a cab driver,” stated a police official connected to the case.
Investigations unveiled Sukhpreet’s prior involvements in drug-related offences, with two registered cases against him in Moga.
