Sam Altman Praises DeepSeek’s Model, Promises New Releases Soon

Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAi, has lately noted the increasing competition from DeepSeek, whose open-source AI model DeepSeek-R1 was released last week. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman praised the qualities of the model—which included its performance for the price—but he reiterated OpenAI’s plan to create improved models. Given their cost performance, Altman observed, “DeepSeek’s R1 is a great model,” followed by Altman adding, “we will naturally create much improved models and it’s certainly invigorating to have a new rival! we will pull up some releases.”

Famously able to run well on less-advanced chips, DeepSeek-R1 has positioned itself as a strong rival to OpenAI and Meta, therefore providing more accessible AI technology for a bigger audience. Even though it is challenging, Altman is looking ahead to OpenAI’s future, saying: “We are excited to maintain our research roadmap and believe more than before to meet our goal more compute is essential now”. He emphasizes the growing international demand of artificial intelligence: “the world is going to want to use a LOT of AI, and really be very surprised by the next-gen models”.
