The new extension applies to taxpayers who are not subject to audit requirements. Businesses and professionals with audited accounts continue to have different timelines.
E-Filing Portal to Remain in Maintenance Mode
Along with the extension, the Income Tax Department announced that its official e-filing portal will remain in maintenance mode. The downtime will take place between 12:00 AM and 02:30 AM on September 16.
Officials said the move is necessary to make technical adjustments for the new deadline. Taxpayers are advised to plan their filing accordingly.
Previous Deadlines
The last date to file Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26 was first set as July 31, 2025. Later, it was extended to September 15, 2025. Now, the CBDT has given one more day of relief, and the new deadline is September 16, 2025.
This move will help lakhs of taxpayers who could not finish filing due to last-minute issues or technical problems.
Advisory for Taxpayers
The Income Tax Department has advised people not to wait until the very last moment to file. Filing on time helps in smooth processing, avoids penalties, and saves stress.
The department has also asked taxpayers to trust only official announcements and not believe in fake news about deadline extensions spreading on social media.
