Tesla recently posted 13 job openings in India on LinkedIn, signaling its plans to enter the market. This move came shortly after Tesla CEO Elon Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the U.S.

Anand Mahindra Responds to Tesla Challenge

Meanwhile, a social media user, Girish Arora, asked Anand Mahindra how his company would handle competition from Tesla. Notably, Mahindra had just launched two new EVs, BE 6 and XEV 9e.

In response, Mahindra confidently stated, “We have been asked similar questions ever since the opening up of the Indian economy in 1991.” He recalled how, at that time, many doubted whether Mahindra could compete against Tata, Maruti, and global automakers.

“But we’re still around,” he asserted. “And working like maniacs to still be around & relevant even a century from now.” He concluded on an optimistic note, saying, “With you cheering us on, we will make that happen…”

Tesla’s Hiring Plans in India

At the same time, Tesla has started recruiting for multiple roles, including:

  • Tesla Advisor
  • Inside Sales Advisor
  • Customer Support Specialist
  • Consumer Engagement Manager
  • Service Manager
  • Order Operations Specialist
  • Business Operations Analyst
  • Store Manager
  • Parts Advisor
  • Service Advisor
  • Delivery Operations Specialist
  • Customer Support Supervisor

Interestingly, at least five positions, including service technicians and advisory roles, are available in both Mumbai and Delhi. On the other hand, positions like customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist are only for Mumbai.

Tesla Eyes India to Boost Sales

It is important to note that Tesla’s sales dropped in 2023 for the first time in nearly a decade. Given that India’s EV market is still in its early stages, Tesla sees an opportunity to regain momentum and expand its global reach.

As a result, its entry into India could intensify competition with domestic automakers like Mahindra, Tata, and Maruti. In the long run, this could shape the future of the electric vehicle industry in India.
