Air India Cuts Free Cabin Baggage Allowance To 15kg

Air India has decided to reduce its free baggage allowance for economy-class passengers on domestic flights. The new limit will be 15kg instead of the previous 20kg.

This change is part of the menu-based pricing model introduced by Tata Group-owned Air India in August last year. According to Air India, the one-size-fits-all approach is no longer ideal.

Earlier, passengers used to carry 25 kg check-in baggage free of any additional charge. While in other domestic fights like IndiGo, Vistara and SpiceJet, they offer 15 kilograms of check-in baggage without any additional charge.

According to Air India spokesperson, these three fare groups- Comfort, Comfort Plus, and Flex offer various level of benefits and fare restrictions in various prices.

But from May 2nd onwards, free-check-in baggage allowance in comfort and Comfort Plus categories will now be reduced to 15 kg from 20 kg and 25 kg, respectively.

“On domestic routes in Economy Class, both ‘Comfort’ and ‘Comfort Plus’ fare families now provide 15 kg baggage allowance, while ‘Flex’ provides 25 kg allowance. The Business Class baggage allowance on domestic routes ranges from 25 kg to 35 kg. The free baggage allowance on international flights varies from market to market.” said the spokesperson

But the spokesperson further emphasized, these fare families are designed to allow passengers to select their fares and services that suit their requirements. considering the different preferences of travellers.

Also added, that these changes were made in response to feedback and Air India’s comprehensive study.
