The central government retirees experienced an anxiety wave on the effective loss of key retirement benefits in the context of the 8th Pay Commission.

For the majority of retirees using the last pension and Dearness Relief in order to cope with the rise in prices of commodities and other essential goods and services in the market, the news touched the right chords. However, the message proved completely inaccurate with the official clarifications.

What the Viral Claims Said

The rumors were stating that the Finance Act, 2025 has rolled back the hikes on Dearness Allowances, changes in pensions and Pay Commission related dues. Some reports also claimed that pensioners were to be left completely out of the scope of the 8th Central Pay Commission altogether.

These pieces of news were shared as they were, and as a consequence, panic spread amongst the lakhs of people who were formerly employed by the government.

PIB Official Fact Check Corrects

The government’s fact-checking unit, PIB Fact Check, was quick to dispel these rumors. It said, “There is no decision to abolish DA, DR and pension revision benefits. Pensions are safe.” It cautioned pensioners to check government notifications and parliament announcements and nothing else.

What Pensioners Will Continue to Get

As it stands, there has been no modification in the basic facility enjoyed by pensioners under central government. The changes in pension, which would follow Pay Commission recommendations, have also remained in force.

Dearness Relief shall continue to be revised on a half-yearly basis, in January and July respectively, to mitigate the effects of inflation. Overall, it can be stated that the monetary safeguards for pensioners are in place.

What are the Rule Change That Sparked Confusion

Many of the confusions arise from a limited change introduced under Rule 37 of the CCS Pension rules of 2021. The limited change affects only a certain category of employees who are dismissed for serious misconduct after absorption into public sector enterprises.

The change follows a judgment by the Supreme Court and does not relate to the general retirement or the extant pensioners. Unfortunately, even a limited change was termed as a rollback of benefits.

Statements Made by the Government Inside Parliament

The issue has been dealt with by the Finance Ministry itself in Parliament. “Pensioning falls largely under the 8th Pay Commission’s ambit: Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary. Currently, there’s no plan to link DA/DR to basic pay. That would require waiting till this report is tabled, hopefully by 2027.”

However, in a world of instant forwards and partial information, this story is a wake-up call in a way, as it is a reminder of the fact that not all alarming messages should be taken seriously. However, for now, pensioners can relax, as their benefits are safe and they can disregard the reports doing the rounds.
