Agile is the standard way of operating for product and software teams, regardless of the industry. Agile began as a methodology for developing software and has since evolved as a management philosophy to the point where it applies to marketing, finance, HR, and even executive leadership. For professionals who wish to validate their knowledge of Agile as well as provide a distinction in a market where the understanding of Agile is more of a requirement than a differentiator, the Agile Certifications create a path of credibility. This guide will focus on the most important Agile certifications in 2026. Each will describe what it is supposed to be demonstrating.

The Agile Certification Landscape

The Agile certification is known for being highly fragmented. An abundance of institutions will provide certifications across the separate frameworks and roles that create a wide gap in the worth of a given certification based on the expectations of a given industry or employer. The most trustworthy certifications tend to be within a triad of institutions: the Scrum Alliance, Scrum.org, and PMI. The SAFe certifications issued by the Scaled Agile are noteworthy as well, especially due to the increased focus on Agile Enterprise practices. The first step in this process is to know which certification compliments your field and the market you’re directing your focus on.

CSM: Certified ScrumMaster

Scrum Alliance’s Certified ScrumMaster certification is the world’s most recognized agile certification. It centers around the Scrum framework and the responsibilities of a Scrum Master as the facilitative and removing team obstacles. Attaining the CSM designation includes participation in a two-day, sanctioned workshop and successfully completing an easy online test. Because of the test’s relatively simple threshold, CSM has become essentially a requirement for nearly all technology, product management, and project delivery positions. CSM is best for those who are just starting agile facilitation.

PSM: Professional ScrumMaster

A popular alternative to the CSM is the Professional Scrum Master designation from Scrum.org. It is believed to have a higher level of rigor compared to the CSM. The PSM I is very difficult, with an in-depth comprehension of the Scrum Guide and its usefulness in solving complex team problems. The PSM is a step-up from the CSM for its lack of obligatory attendance to a certified workshop for candidates to take PSM examination. PSM II and PSM III are available for those who want to continue growing their Scrum Master skills. The PSM designation is held in higher regard than the CSM in many technical recruitment frameworks.

PMI-ACP: The Broadest Agile Credential

Out of all the Agile certifications, the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner is the most wide-ranging. The certification tests your breadth of knowledge across various agile models, including, but not limited to, Scrum, Kanban, Lean, XP, and Crystal. To be eligible for the certification, a candidate must have 2,000 hours of general project experience, 1,500 hours of agile project experience, and 21 hours of agile training. The PMI-ACP certification is the most appropriate for experienced project managers moving to or already in the function of agile project management and desire a neutral certification exhibiting in-depth agile knowledge.

SAFe Certifications: Enterprise Agile

The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is the most popular of all the enterprise agile methodologies used to organize agile teams across several programs in large companies. The certifications associated with the SAFe framework consist of SAFe Agilist (SA), SAFe Scrum Master (SSM), SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM) and SAFe Program Consultant (SPC). For individuals working in companies that have officially been using the SAFe framework, these certifications are often a must. The most applicable and broad starting certification is SAFe Agilist.

CSPO: Certified Scrum Product Owner

For individuals in the realm of product ownership, the Certified Scrum Product Owner offered by Scrum Alliance is the baseline certification. The certification covers all areas of managing the product backlog, as well as defining and prioritizing product goals in order to achieve optimum value for the product. An attendee is required to participate in a two day course to obtain the CSPO certification. For individuals in product management or business analysis, among others, that define the role of the agile teams in the work that they do, this certification gives them the knowledge of the framework and the social credential to help them function and progress in that position.

Kanban Certifications

Although i don’t use scrum, i will pursue kanban based credentials from kanban university as a complementary path. The first choice, in level, is the Team Kanban Practitioner (TKP). Kanban certification is most relevant in IT operations, support, and service delivery areas, where the nature of work is continuous and unpredictable, rather than sprint based.

Which Agile Certification Should You Start With?

Scrum masters and team facilitators consider starting with the CSM or PSM I, and go with PSM for stronger market differentiation. Product Owners should consider the CSPO as well. Experienced PMs looking for a broader agile covering consider the PMI-ACP. The most immediately relevant credential for your company, if they use SAFe, is the SAFe Agilist. In every case, certification and real agile practice should be combined. The frameworks leave a lot of gaps and they only make sense in the context of practice and most importantly, working teams.

It is great to have a certification, but even better to have the knowledge and experience that the certification represents. In the year 2026, employers will be very adept at differentiating from candidates that have earned their certifications based on memorizing requirements to candidates that will demonstrate true understanding of agile principles.
