Agile began as a methodology for developing software and has since evolved as a management philosophy to the point where it applies to marketing, finance, HR, and even executive leadership. For professionals who wish to validate their knowledge of Agile as well as provide a distinction in a market where the understanding of Agile is more of a requirement than a differentiator, the Agile Certifications create a path of credibility. PSM II and PSM III are available for those who want to continue growing their Scrum Master skills. The PSM designation is held in higher regard than the CSM in many technical recruitment frameworks.
PMI-ACP: The Broadest Agile Credential
Out of all the Agile certifications, the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner is the most wide-ranging. Kanban Certifications
Although i don’t use scrum, i will pursue kanban based credentials from kanban university as a complementary path. The first choice, in level, is the Team Kanban Practitioner (TKP). Kanban certification is most relevant in IT operations, support, and service delivery areas, where the nature of work is continuous and unpredictable, rather than sprint based.
Which Agile Certification Should You Start With?
Scrum masters and team facilitators consider starting with the CSM or PSM I, and go with PSM for stronger market differentiation. Product Owners should consider the CSPO as well. Experienced PMs looking for a broader agile covering consider the PMI-ACP. The most immediately relevant credential for your company, if they use SAFe, is the SAFe Agilist. In every case, certification and real agile practice should be combined. The frameworks leave a lot of gaps and they only make sense in the context of practice and most importantly, working teams.
It is great to have a certification, but even better to have the knowledge and experience that the certification represents. In the year 2026, employers will be very adept at differentiating from candidates that have earned their certifications based on memorizing requirements to candidates that will demonstrate true understanding of agile principles.
