South Korean YouTuber Tzuyang Opens Up About Dating Violence, Sparks National Debate

South Korean YouTuber Tzuyang revealed on Thursday that she had been a victim of dating violence at the hands of her former boyfriend. Tzuyang, known for her popular “mukbang” videos where she eats large amounts of food, shared that her ex-boyfriend physically abused her and tried to extort a significant amount of money from her.

According to Tzuyang’s lawyers, criminal cases were filed against her former boyfriend, but these were closed after he tragically took his own life. During a livestream that garnered over 2 million views, Tzuyang disclosed details of the abuse, stating that her ex-boyfriend hit her body to avoid leaving visible marks on her face. She also accused him of sharing private information about her life with other YouTubers.

This revelation has sparked a debate in South Korea about the increasing prevalence of gender-based violence. In 2023 alone, nearly 14,000 people were charged with dating violence, marking a significant rise from previous years. Activists are urging lawmakers to implement stricter punishments and improve protections for victims in light of these alarming trends.
