Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola has one regret about creating what is widely considered the best sequel of all time, The Godfather Part II (1974), according to Deadline. Hollywood’s growing obsession with sequels began with The Godfather Part II, for which Coppola fought to return as director after the success of the first film in 1972.
“They said, basically, ‘Francis, you’ve made Coca-Cola. You’re gonna stop making colas?'” Coppola recalled.
In an effort to avoid directing the sequel, Coppola suggested that up-and-coming director Martin Scorsese take the helm. However, Paramount Studios rejected the idea. Instead, Coppola made a few demands, including a $1 million paycheck and the addition of ‘Part II’ to the title.

Although the studio thought it was a crazy idea, they ultimately agreed. “So I’m the jerk that started numbers on movies,” Coppola said. “I’m embarrassed, and I apologize to everyone.”
The Godfather Part II, one of the greatest films of all time, went on to win six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Coppola, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Coppola and author Mario Puzo, according to Deadline.
Coppola’s legacy is built on an impressive body of work, including iconic films such as The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, and Apocalypse Now. Beyond his directorial successes, Coppola has played a key role in shaping the careers of many filmmakers, including members of his own family—Sofia, Gia, and Roman Coppola.
