Sara Ali Khan’s frequent visits to Kedarnath are well known. However, some people criticize her for being a Muslim visiting a Hindu religious site. Despite this, she chooses to ignore the negativity and focus on her beliefs.
Mother’s Lesson on Identity
At the Times Now Summit 2025, Sara Ali Khan shared a childhood memory that shaped her understanding of identity. She recalled feeling confused about her background while traveling abroad with her parents.
“I was very young, in school, and even when my parents were married and we used to immigrate together abroad, I used to always wonder… Amrita Singh, Saif Pataudi, Sara Sultana, Ibrahim Ali Khan, what is going on? Who are we? And I remember asking my mom, what am I? And she told me, you are Indian. And I will never forget that,” she said.
Her mother, Amrita Singh, taught her to see herself as Indian rather than define herself by religion or caste.
Belief in Secularism
Sara believes India is a secular country where religion should not divide people. When asked about her parents’ different religious backgrounds, she responded firmly.
“We are a secular nation, and I think that all these concepts, all these boundaries are made and manipulated by people, and I don’t adhere to them. I just don’t give it the importance that the other person maybe does,” she said.
Although trolls often target her, Sara refuses to let negativity affect her. “It’s a fool’s errand to change the way other people think. I have to tune it out,” she added.
Personal Connection to Kedarnath
Sara clarified that her visits to Kedarnath are a personal choice. She finds peace there, regardless of what others think.
“My personal trip to Kedarnath, with all due respect to anybody who likes it, who hates it, it’s not about any of you. It’s about me. And I feel comfortable there, I feel peaceful there, I feel happy there,” she stated.
Despite criticism, Sara remains true to her beliefs. She continues to visit places that bring her peace, without letting negativity influence her choices.
