Saif Ali Khan Attack: Accused Remanded to Police Custody Until January 24

A 30-year-old man arrested in connection with the Saif Ali Khan attack case was remanded to police custody by a Mumbai court until January 24.

The accused was presented before a holiday court in Bandra around 1:30 PM on Sunday by Mumbai Police.

Saif Ali Khan was reportedly stabbed multiple times at his luxury Bandra apartment in the early hours of January 16 during an attempted burglary. The actor, who sustained six stab wounds, was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and was declared out of danger by doctors.

Police apprehended the attacker early Sunday morning in the Hiranandani Estate area on Ghodbunder Road, Thane district. Authorities identified the suspect as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national who allegedly entered India illegally and adopted the alias Bijoy Das. They also stated that the accused originated from Jhalokati, Bangladesh, and had been residing in Mumbai for over five months, taking up odd jobs.

Accused’s Lawyer Refutes Police Claims

The lawyer representing the accused contested the police’s assertions regarding his client’s Bangladeshi origin. The defense claimed that the accused had been living in Thane for more than seven years and had family in Mumbai.

“A police custody of five days has been granted. The court has instructed the police to submit a report within this period. However, the police have no evidence proving my client’s Bangladeshi citizenship,” said advocate Sandeep Shekhane, representing Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, as reported by ANI.

The lawyer further argued: “The claim that he arrived six months ago is incorrect. He has been residing here for over seven years, and his family is based in Mumbai. This is a clear violation of Section 43A. There has been no proper investigation…”
