Robert Downey Jr Confirms MCU Return But Not As Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr is set to make his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time as the villain Doctor Doom. The actor, known for his iconic portrayal of Iron Man, will take on the role of Dr. Doom in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday.” Both Robert Downey Jr and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed this exciting news at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. RDJ made a surprise appearance at Hall H during the event, revealing himself as the Fantastic Four antagonist Doctor Doom on stage.

In addition to Downey Jr’s return, Kevin Feige announced that the Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony Russo, will also be returning to the MCU. The director duo will helm the “Avengers: Doomsday” film and were present at Hall H for the announcement.

“If we’re going to bring Doctor Doom to the screen — he is one of the most complex characters, most entertaining characters in all of fiction,” Anthony Russo stated, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “If we’re going to do this … then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world.”

“As proof of the unimaginable possibilities of the Marvel Universe, we give you the one person who could play Victor von Doom…” he added before RDJ took center stage and unveiled himself as Doctor Doom.

A video from Comic-Con that went viral shows RDJ in the iconic green Doctor Doom robe and a metal mask. He removed the mask to announce his return, thrilling fans in attendance. “New mask, same task,” he said, confirming his comeback to the MCU. “What can I say, I like playing complicated characters,” he teased.

He will work with the Russo Brothers on “Avengers: Doomsday,” set for a May 2026 release, and is expected to reprise his role in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” aiming for a May 2027 release. Robert Downey Jr and the Russo Brothers previously collaborated on “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).

Robert Downey Jr had announced his departure from the MCU after “Avengers: Endgame,” where his character Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, died, paving the way for RDJ’s exit.
