Ranbir Kapoor recently opened up about his complex relationship with his late father, the legendary actor Rishi Kapoor. On Nikhil Kamath’s podcast People by WTF, Ranbir shared that his deepest wish is to have his father back so they could spend more time together and have conversations.
Ranbir admitted that he and Rishi did not have a close or warm relationship. Rishi once described their relationship as being like a glass wall—visible but not touchable. Ranbir has often spoken about having a closer bond with his mother, Neetu Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor passed away from cancer in 2020.
Ranbir also discussed his father’s reaction to his films. He revealed that Rishi was hesitant to watch some of Ranbir’s movies. For example, he avoided watching Tamasha because he thought it was too “pseudo.” Rishi’s fear of his son’s work influenced their relationship, as he would often avoid giving feedback on Ranbir’s films.
Despite their strained relationship, Rishi did express pride in some of Ranbir’s work. He appreciated Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, a romantic comedy released in 2009, and Ranbir’s role in Raajneeti, a political thriller from 2010. Rishi was also impressed by Ranbir’s performance in the 2018 biopic Sanju, where Ranbir played Sanjay Dutt.
Ranbir Kapoor is set to appear next in Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation of the *Ramayana* and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Love & War.
