Netflix Ends Basic Ad-Free Plan in the US: What Are Your Subscription Options?

Netflix is set to discontinue its $11.99 per month basic ad-free plan in the US, following its earlier elimination in the UK and Canada. This change means current subscribers will need to transition to other available plans.

End of the Basic Plan

Effective soon, Netflix will no longer offer the basic plan with no ads. Subscribers on this plan will be informed via email and will need to select an alternative option. The basic plan has been unavailable in Netflix’s Plan and Pricing section since July 2023, but subscribers could keep it if they didn’t alter or cancel their subscription.

Reasons Behind the Change

Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters explained the rationale for the shift during a recent video conference. “We’re enhancing our offering with our $6.99 per month ad-supported plan, which includes two streams instead of one, higher definition, and download options—all at a lower cost,” Peters noted. This ad-supported plan is designed to attract cost-conscious viewers while maintaining a decent viewing experience.

Available Subscription Plans

With the basic plan discontinued, Netflix subscribers can choose from the following plans:

  • Standard with Ads Plan: For $6.99 per month, this plan provides two simultaneous streams, Full HD quality, and the ability to download on two devices.
  • Standard Plan: At $15.99 per month, this plan includes Full HD video quality, two simultaneous streams, and downloads on up to two devices. It also offers the option to add one additional member outside the household for $7.99 per month.
  • Premium Plan: Priced at $22.99 per month, this plan offers 4K quality on up to four devices, downloads on up to six devices, and the option to add two extra members for an additional $7.99 per month.

Impact and Subscriber Trends

Netflix’s move aligns with broader industry trends toward tiered pricing to meet diverse consumer needs. The company’s second-quarter reports indicate a growth of 8 million new subscribers, partly driven by the removal of popular shows such as Bridgerton and The Roast of Tom Brady.

Looking Ahead

As Netflix adjusts its subscription offerings, subscribers will need to choose the plan that best suits their preferences. Whether opting for an ad-supported model or a higher-tier plan, Netflix aims to provide flexible choices to meet its users’ needs.
