Kiran Rao’s ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been selected as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars, as announced by the Film Federation of India on Monday.
The film, a light-hearted satire addressing patriarchy, was chosen from a competitive lineup of 29 films. This selection included notable titles like the Bollywood hit ‘Animal’, the Malayalam National Award-winning ‘Aattam’, and the Cannes awardee ‘All We Imagine As Light’.
A 13-member selection committee, led by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, unanimously opted for ‘Laapataa Ladies’, which is produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, to represent India in the Best International Film category at the Academy Awards.
Other contenders in the mix included Tamil film ‘Maharaja’, Telugu entries ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ and ‘Hanu-Man’, as well as Hindi films ‘Swatantraya Veer Savarkar’ and ‘Article 370’. Last year, the Malayalam blockbuster ‘2018: Everyone is a Hero’ was submitted for consideration.
