In response to an increase in reported cases of mumps, the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) has opted to scrutinize mumps cases this year. Dr. Daksha Shah, the BMC executive health officer, stated that while there are typically a few mumps cases annually, the analysis aims to determine the vaccination status of those affected. Mumps, a contagious viral infection that causes swelling of the parotid salivary glands, primarily affects the pediatric age group but can also impact adolescents and adults, potentially leading to temporary or permanent hearing loss.
Dr. Hetal Marfatia, Head of KEM ENT, noted a surge in patients presenting with post-mumps hearing loss, emphasizing the importance of early intervention. Dr. Marfatia cited instances of hearing loss, including a 35-year-old man from Dombivli who contracted mumps after his 5-year-old daughter. While Mumbai has reported increased mumps cases in specific pockets, BMC offers the MMR vaccine, enhancing protection against mumps for the city’s children.
Pediatrician Dr. Nitin Shah highlighted outbreaks in Navi Mumbai and neighboring states, emphasizing the mild nature of mumps while cautioning about potential severe side effects in a small group of patients. Dr. Vikas Agarwal, an ENT specialist, stressed the need for prompt medical attention to prevent permanent hearing loss. Dr. Sangeeta Rawat, KEM Hospital dean, suggested that immediate administration of steroids upon detecting hearing loss during a viral infection could offer a chance of reversal. The move to analyze cases aligns with BMC’s commitment to understanding the vaccination status of individuals affected by mumps.
