The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken stringent measures against air pollution by registering 1,207 cases and levying fines amounting to Rs 45.77 lakh. These actions targeted illegal dumping of debris and burning of garbage at construction sites, spanning from October 25 to December 31, 2023.
The highest fine, totaling Rs 7.69 lakh, was imposed on 97 violators in the Bandra, Khar, and Santacruz West areas.
Over the period from November 4 to December 29, 2023, the civic body collected fines amounting to Rs 27.19 lakh from those failing to clean premises and cover dumping trucks. Additionally, 282 cases were filed for the illegal dumping of debris on roadsides, resulting in a fine collection of Rs 16 lakh from the offenders.
In June, the BMC initiated a dedicated WhatsApp number (81696-81696), known as the ‘Chief Minister Clean Mumbai Helpline,’ to address garbage-related complaints. This helpline facilitates prompt actions by civic officials against violators.
These measures were implemented in response to a noticeable increase in air pollution levels post-monsoon.
