A video of the arrest of the three remaining suspects in the gangrape of a woman and the attack on two Armymen has sparked a political dispute in Madhya Pradesh. The video, circulating on social media, shows the husband of a village sarpanch helping facilitate the surrender of the accused on Friday evening.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Nimish Agarwal explained, “The accused had been on the run for two days, hiding in the jungles to evade arrest. They were fearful of being killed in an encounter by the police. We had asked the villagers and family members to bring them to us. While they were being handed over to the police, a video was made.”
The police stated that the sarpanch’s husband, seen in the video, has a known criminal background. The video is currently under review as part of the ongoing investigation. This footage has led to accusations from Congress members, with MPCC general secretary Rakesh Singh Yadav alleging that BJP leaders were ‘providing protection’ to the criminals involved.
In response, BJP spokesperson Narendra Saluja said, “Prima facie, the video appears to be fake and edited. Congress is adept at releasing such videos. Until a thorough investigation is conducted, nothing can be confirmed about its authenticity.”
