Located on the southern bank of the Ganga, Sultanganj is a town endowed with rich history in the Bhagalpur district of Bihar. It was earlier known as Ajgaibinath and enjoyed great religious and cultural importance among Hindus.
Ajgaibinath Temple, which is devoted to Lord Shiva, draws millions of devotees in Shravan when pilgrims collect holy water from the Ganga here and set off on foot towards Baidyanath Temple in Deoghar district of Jharkhand. The ritual not only generates religious passion but seasonal earnings for the local people.
Sultanganj will go to the polls in Phase 2 on November 11, 2025 and the result will be announced on November 14, 2025. This will be an important contest as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) fights for retaining the seat after the entire political equation changed.
In 2020, JD(U) candidate Lalit Narayan Mandal defeated Congress's Lalan Kumar by 11,265 votes. The entry of LJP into the contest could not dent JD(U)'s dominance as it managed to bag over 10,000 votes. RJD and BJP have never won this constituency since its formation.
Polling in all booths will commence at 7:00 a.m. and continue until 6:00 p.m. The Election Commission is likely to strengthen booth level management in rural areas to ensure smooth polling.
Sultanganj is a small town but significant for its mythological, historical and cultural legacy. Besides being a major pilgrimage site, it also has archaeological importance most notably with a bronze Buddha statue from the Gupta period discovered here, which is now displayed in the Birmingham Museum in the UK. The town's economy depends mostly on agriculture and small-scale industries, supplemented by seasonal tourism.
In the 2020 Assembly elections, Sultanganj had 328,314 registered voters, which expanded to 339,156 during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The constituency's voter composition includes 12.97% Scheduled Castes, 11.7% Muslims, and over 87% rural voters, indicating its mainly agrarian character.
The Sultanganj Assembly constituency was established in 1951 and comes under the Banka Lok Sabha seat. In its five-decade history, it has witnessed 17 elections. For the last six consecutive polls, JD(U) and its earlier avatar, the Samata Party, have won the seat. Before the rise of JD(U), Congress dominated the constituency, winning seven times.
