The Sonbarsha Vidhan Sabha constituency, number 74, is a Scheduled Caste (SC) reserved seat situated in the Saharsa district of Bihar. It is one of the six assembly segments that come under the broader Madhepura Lok Sabha constituency. A constituency that was previously considered an open seat, Sonbarsha was reserved for Scheduled Castes following the Delimitation Order of 2008 and has since been considered a strong bastion for the Janata Dal (United). The incumbent MLA has secured a hat-trick of victories, continuously winning the last three successive assembly elections for the JD(U).

The polling in Sonbarsha (SC) constituency will be held in the first phase of the Assembly Elections in Bihar on November 6, 2025. The counting of votes and the announcement of results for the constituency will take place on November 14, 2025.

Sonbarsha Bihar Election Result 2020

In the 2020 election, the seat was convincingly won by the Janata Dal (United) candidate, Ratnesh Sada. He secured 67,678 votes with a vote share of 40.2 %. Sada defeated the INC candidate, Tarni Rishideo, by a margin of 13,466 votes. The contest also saw LJP’s Sarita Devi putting up a good fight with a sizeable percentage of votes.

In Sonbarsha (SC), the voting window is usually from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on the polling day, i.e., November 6, 2025, though this will be finally confirmed by the Election Commission of India.

What is the Population Sonbarsha?

The Sonbarsha Assembly constituency (No. 74) is a rural segment, covering the entire area of the Sonbarsha, Patarghat, and Banma Itahri community development blocks in the Saharsa district. The area falls under the Kosi river basin, which is richly fertile and is primarily agrarian in nature; the paddy and wheat fields form the signature topography. The total population of Sonbarsha was reported as 5,44,751.

How many Sonbarsha registered Voters?

Demographically, the constituency contains a sizeable Scheduled Caste (SC) voting population, which is about 27.1 % of the total electorate. The Muslim population constitutes approximately 15.4 %, while the Yadav community is approximately 17.7 %.

This complex mix of dominant social groups makes the SC-reserved seat an important electoral battleground. In the 2020 Assembly election, Sonbarsha had 3,13,357 registered voters, while the turnout, at around 54.10 %, was rather modest. In comparison, by the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the total electorate had increased to over 3,18,000.

The Sonbarsha assembly constituency was earlier created in 1951 and first went to the polls in the General Election of 1952. It remained an open seat till the Delimitation Order of 2008, after which it came to be known as a Scheduled Caste (SC) reserved seat, from the 2010 Assembly elections onward.
