Rafiganj, the second-largest town in Bihar’s Aurangabad district after the headquarters, owes its name to Rafiuddin Ahmed – a 19th-century zamindar (landlord) who transformed this riverside settlement into a commercial hub. When the East Indian Railway extended its line in the 1880s, Rafiuddin donated land for the station and built the first grain warehouses. What began as “Rafi ka Ganj” (Rafi’s Market) in railway records became Rafiganj by 1892. Today, this block-level town on the Dhava River, 30 km from Aurangabad and 25 km from Gaya, still bears traces of that mercantile legacy in its old railway quarter godowns – now stacked with election posters instead of grain or opium.
