Purnia has often been referred to as the gateway to progress in North Bihar, both economically and politically. Once a dense forested region its name deriving from the Sanskrit Purna-Aranya, meaning complete jungle and Purnia has grown to be the fourth largest city in Bihar known for its rich agricultural base, strategic military presence and vibrant culture, it has also been a decisive seat in the state's politics.
Purnia Assembly Election Date is 11-11-2025. Counting of votes is scheduled for 14-11-2025 as part of Phase 2. One of Bihar's 243 Assembly constituencies, Purnia will again see a high-profile fight between BJP, Congress and regional players.
In the 2020 Bihar Assembly election, Vijay Kumar Khemka of the BJP retained the Purnia seat by taking 97,757 votes to defeat Indu Sinha of the Congress, who netted 65,603 votes. This victory marked the seventh consecutive win for BJP in the constituency and it only cemented its grip after the fall of the Left dominance that once characterized Purnia's politics.
Voting in the Purnia constituency will be done between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., following the guidelines of the Election Commission. The sensitive polling booths in rural and urban areas will have enhanced security measures.
In the Assembly segment of Purnia, there is an estimated population of around 3.2 lakh with Hindus making up about 75 percent and Muslims approximately 23 percent. Literacy and urbanisation in the area are amongst the highest in the region of Seemanchal.
The total number of registered voters in 2020 stood at 312,793, which rose to 329,903 by the time of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Of the electors, Scheduled Castes constituted 11.14%, Scheduled Tribes 5.99% and Muslim voters nearly 25%.
The Purnia Assembly constituency was formed in 1951, making it one of Bihar's oldest political constituencies. Over the years, its leanings shifted from Congress dominance through the 1950s and 60s, Left influence under Ajit Sarkar (CPM), to a BJP fortress since 2000.
