Nathnagar is a historic town in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district, carries a legacy that dates back nearly 2,800 years. Once part of the ancient Anga Mahajanapada, one of the sixteen great republics of early India, it is deeply tied to the legends of Karna, the heroic figure from the Mahabharata.

Archaeological remains found in Champanagar, now within Nathnagar, suggest it was once the capital of the Anga Kingdom. The area’s ancient past still whispers through its Maninath Temple, believed to have origins in the Mahabharata era.

The Nathnagar Assembly constituency will go to polls on November 11, 2025, in Phase 2 of the Bihar Assembly elections. The counting of votes will take place on November 14, 2025. With Bihar’s 243 constituencies electing their MLAs, Nathnagar is poised to be one of the most closely watched contests after RJD’s 2020 breakthrough.

Nathnagar Bihar Election Result 2020

In the 2020 Assembly elections, RJD candidate Ali Ashraf Siddiqui wrested the seat from the JD(U), defeating Lakshmikant Mandal by a margin of 7,756 votes. The LJP, contesting separately after breaking away from the NDA, cut into JD(U)’s vote share with 14,715 votes. However, the dynamics have since changed. During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the JD(U) regained its footing, leading by 10,798 votes in the Nathnagar segment an indicator of the NDA’s revival here.

Nathnagar is only 10 km away from Bhagalpur, located near the Ganga River. The fertile plains of the region have a predominantly agricultural-based economy with some small-scale industries that have come up in recent times.

Other nearby towns include Sultanganj and Kahalgaon adding to its regional importance. Flat terrain, historic temples and archaeological heritage combine to make Nathnagar culturally significant and strategically important in Bhagalpur politics.

In 2020, Nathnagar had 326,124 registered voters, and during the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the number rose to 340,735. The voter composition included 10.9% Scheduled Castes, while Muslims are a formidable 22.3% of the population. With only 13.94% urban voters, Nathnagar remains essentially rural, where caste-community alliances play the decisive role in choosing representatives.

Nathnagar Was Established In?

The Nathnagar Assembly constituency was established in 1967 and forms part of the Bhagalpur Lok Sabha seat. Over 15 elections, including one bypoll in 2019, the seat has swung between Congress, Janata Dal, JD(U) and RJD. The JD(U) has dominated since 2000, winning six consecutive times until its 2020 defeat.
