The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections have already geared up as voters are up to decide on key issues such as infrastructure growth, job creation, school standards, healthcare access, and safe public order. With 243 seats up for grabs, every constituency matters — and political parties have already announced their candidate lists in earnest. A party or alliance must secure at least 122 seats to stake a claim to power in the state.

Kurtha, one of the five development blocks in Bihar’s Arwal district, lies in the Magadh region, 23 km east of Arwal and 25 km from Jehanabad. Nearby towns include Makhdumpur, Jehanabad, Masaurhi, and Rafiganj. Situated on the banks of the Sone River, a major Ganga tributary, the area features fertile alluvial plains that support crops like rice, wheat, and pulses.

Kurtha Bihar Election Result 2020?

Over 17 elections, outcomes have varied. Socialist parties dominated early polls, winning four of the first five contests. Later, parties claiming socialist ideology – Janata Dal, LJP, JD(U), and RJD – won twice each. The Congress, perceived as left-of-centre, also won twice. Far-left and far-right parties have yet to gain a foothold. In 2020, RJD’s Bagi Kumar Verma wrested the seat from JD(U)’s two-term MLA Satyadeo Singh by a massive margin of 27,810 votes, prompting speculation that the NDA may cede the seat to another ally in 2025.

What is the Population of Kurtha?

As per the 2011 Census, Kurtha covered 121.97 sq km with a population of 121,818 (density: 999/sq km). All households were rural, spread across 70 villages (25 with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants). The literacy rate stood at a low 51.83 per cent, with a stark gender gap (males: 61.04 per cent, females: 41.86 per cent). The sex ratio was 924 females per 1,000 males.

How many Registered Voters are in Kurtha?

Kurtha’s electorate hinges on Kushwaha, Yadav, and Bhumihar voters due to their numerical strength. A purely rural, general-category seat, it has no urban voters. Scheduled Castes comprise 19.04 per cent of the electorate, while Muslims account for 8.3 per cent. In the 2020 Assembly polls, 55.21 per cent of Kurtha’s 248,759 registered voters cast votes, rising marginally to 258,277 in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The RJD led in all six Assembly segments of Jahanabad in 2024, including Kurtha, which may push the NDA to field a fresh face to mobilise the 45 per cent who abstained in 2020.

Kurtha was Established in?

Established as an Assembly constituency in 1951, Kurtha is one of six segments under the Jahanabad Lok Sabha seat. It is a town and subdivision in the Arwal district of Bihar, India, and also the name of several villages in India and a location in Nepal. There is no single "establishment" date for the locality itself, as settlements often evolve over a long period rather than being founded on a specific date.

Historically, Kurtha was part of the Magadh Empire (6th–4th century BCE) and was later ruled by the Mauryas, Guptas, and Palas. During Sher Shah Suri’s reign, it gained strategic prominence. The region also played a role in the 1857 rebellion, with local zamindars resisting British rule and siding with Kunwar Singh.

Kurtha, which was formerly a part of the Naxal-affected Magadh zone in Bihar, has had increased security since 2020, but some areas are still politically sensitive because of past Maoist impact on voter behavior. In the 1990s–2000s, it served as a transit corridor for Naxals between Jehanabad’s forests and Gaya’s hills. Post-Operation Octopus (2020–23) by Bihar Police, the area has witnessed no major incidents since 2019. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs now classifies it as a “low-intensity” zone, though villages like Sangama, Parasi, and Deopur may still see residual Maoist impact on voter mobilisation.
