Korha Assembly constituency has been one of the politically dynamic and socially diversified seats in Bihar's Katihar district. Since its constitution in 1967, it has been a reserved seat for Scheduled Castes.
It is located within the Purnia parliamentary constituency. The area has been marked by migration, agriculture and its identity shaped by being a jute trading hub. Today, Korha reflects both Bihar's rural realities and its dynamic political landscape.
The Election in the Korha Assembly constituency will be held on November 11, 2025, in Phase 2 of the Bihar Vidhan Sabha elections. The counting of votes is scheduled to take place on November 14, 2025. This contest is expected to be among the most keenly watched in Katihar district, with the BJP looking to retain its seat and Congress seeking a comeback.
In the 2020 Assembly elections, Kavita Devi of the BJP defeated Punam Kumari alias Punam Paswan of the Congress by a decisive margin of 28,943 votes. Punam Paswan, who had won the seat in 2015 on a JD(U) ticket, returned to Congress after the party left the NDA. The result cemented BJP’s hold on Korha, a seat known for alternating loyalties and anti-incumbency trends.
Voting in Korha will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Election Commission is likely to focus on smooth polling across remote villages and flood-prone areas, considering the entirely rural nature of the constituency.
The estimated population of Korha is 3.4 lakh with a majority of people residing in rural areas. The constituency has a significant number of Muslims at 31.5%, followed by Scheduled Castes at 12.9%, and Scheduled Tribes at 7.8%. The social composition includes Marwari and Sindhi traders, as well as Bengali Hindu families who have settled here after Partition.
In the 2020 Bihar Assembly election, Korha had 291,238 registered voters, which increased to 300,389 in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, reflecting gradual population growth and voter awareness. There is still considerable migration of people, with around 3,000 voters shifting out between 2020 and 2024.
The Korha Assembly constituency came into being in 1967 and has gone to the polls 14 times since then. Historically a Congress stronghold, it has seen volatile political changes. Most notably, Bhola Paswan Shastri, Bihar's first Scheduled Caste chief minister, represented Korha thrice between 1967 and 1972.
