Katihar is the 10th largest city in Bihar and is one of the key commercial and administrative cities in eastern Bihar situated on the eastern bank of the Kosi River, Katihar has been of strategic importance as it links North Bihar with West Bengal and Assam.
Rich in history and culture, the city carries deep influences from Bengal and Mithila and reflects a diverse linguistic and religious identity. Over the years, Katihar has emerged as a bustling town that mingles tradition with modernity and its political narrative does too.
Katihar will go to Assembly Election 2025 on November 11, 2025, in Phase 2 and the counting of votes is scheduled on November 14, 2025. The contest is going to be very high profile, pitting the BJP, which seeks to retain its long-held bastion against renewed opposition challenges.
In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, Tarkishore Prasad of BJP retained the Katihar seat by getting 82,669 votes, defeating Ram Prakash Mahto of the RJD, who garnered 72,150 votes. The voter turnout was 62.33 percent. This victory marked Prasad's fourth consecutive win and reaffirmed Katihar's position as a BJP stronghold in the Seemanchal region.
Voting in Katihar will be conducted from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. following usual Election Commission guidelines. Security forces will be deployed across both urban and semi-rural polling booths to ensure peaceful voting.
Katihar has an estimated electorate of 3.1 lakh in the Assembly segment. As per the religious census, Hindus are approximately 76.9 percent and the Muslims are around 22.1 percent. The city is known for its strong agricultural base, railway industry and rich cultural heritage influenced by both Bihar and Bengal.
In 2020, Katihar had 273,824 registered voters, which increased slightly to 274,372 by the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Scheduled Castes make up 9.96 percent, Scheduled Tribes 6.36 percent and Muslim voters nearly 25.9 percent of the total electorate.
The Katihar Assembly constituency was created in 1957 and is one of the six segments under the Katihar Lok Sabha seat. During all these years, it has returned MLAs belonging to almost all major political parties-from Congress and CPI to RJD and BJP. However, since 2000, BJP's Tarkishore Prasad has remained unbeaten, turning Katihar into a fortress for the saffron party.
