Kahalgaon is one of those historically significant towns in the Bhagalpur district of Bihar that still inherits the great legacy of Vikramshila Mahavihara the ancient Buddhist university established in the 8th century by Pala ruler Dharmapala.
This place was earlier known as Colgong during the time of the British and was considered the center for the cultivation and trade of indigo. It is also housing the NTPC Super Thermal Power Plant today, making it a sort of industrial hub. With its rich mix of heritage, religion and modern development, Kahalgaon stands for Bihar's evolving identity.
The Kahalgaon seat will go to the polls in Phase 2 on November 11, 2025, of the Bihar Vidhan Sabha elections along with the rest of the constituencies in the state. The counting of votes is scheduled for November 14, 2025. This contest is expected to draw attention as traditional loyalties face the test of changing political equations in Bhagalpur district.
In 2020, BJP's Pawan Kumar Yadav took a lead of 42,893 votes over his closest contender, Congress candidate Shubhanand Mukesh. The victory of the BJP marked an end to Congress's winning two consecutive terms and reinforced the hold of the NDA over the constituency. The JD(U) continued its lead over the 2024 Lok Sabha polls by 29,766 votes, showing the strength of the alliance, though Congress is a strong challenger.
It is scheduled that polls in Kahalgaon will be conducted from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and necessary arrangements are expected in rural and riverbank areas to facilitate hassle free polling with a high turnout.
The Kahalgaon Assembly constituency, which is estimated to have around 3.5 lakh population, mainly depends on agriculture and power plant employment. The Kahalgaon constituency consists of 11.71% Scheduled Caste, 1.12% Scheduled Tribe and 18.1% Muslim voters while nearly 7% urban population.
In 2020, Kahalgaon had 331,391 registered voters, which increased to 351,490 in 2024. Voter participation has grown steadily: from 57.48% in 2015 to 62.02% in 2020 is a reflection of the rising engagement by the electorate in state politics.
The Kahalgaon Assembly constituency was established in 1951 and forms part of the Bhagalpur Lok Sabha seat. It comprises Goradih and Sonhoula blocks along with several panchayats including Kahalgaon Nagar Panchayat. Over 17 elections, Congress has dominated with 11 victories while other parties such as JD(U), BJP and CPI have won sporadically.
