Gopalpur which falls under the Naugachhia subdivision of Bhagalpur district is a peculiar mixture of agriculture, trade and small-scale silk production, riding on the legacy of nearby Bhagalpur famed as the Silk City of India.
Just 4 km away from Bhagalpur town, this constituency is still dependent on farming for its economy, supported by the fertile plains of the Ganga River. Despite carrying urban touches around the Gopalpur Bazaar, the area remains rural and agrarian in outlook.
Gopalpur Assembly Election Date is on November 11, 2025, as part of Phase 2 of the Bihar Vidhan Sabha elections. The counting of votes will take place on November 14, 2025 with alliances in flux and candidates under scrutiny, there is a possibility that Gopalpur could see an interesting tussle this year.
In 2020, the JD(U) held on to Gopalpur as Gopal Mandal (Narendra Kumar Niraj) won by 24,461 votes, repeating his win again in the constituency. The repeated controversies of Mandal, his personal following and backing by the NDA saw him through. His margin had fallen to a little over 5,000 votes in 2015 when JD(U) fought alone against BJP.
Voting in Gopalpur will be held from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with extended arrangements to ensure high voter participation in rural and flood affected areas.
The estimated population of Gopalpur is 3.1 lakh, out of which more than 85 percent reside in villages. Scheduled Castes account for 6.97 percent, Scheduled Tribes for 1.1 percent, and Muslims for 7.3 percent. The social composition of the constituency has made caste and local influence the key determinants in the election.
In the 2020 Assembly polls, the constituency had 270,432 registered voters, which further grew to 277,227 by 2024. The voter turnout in the year 2020 was nearly 67 percent, marginally above the state average, reflecting steady rural engagement.
The Gopalpur Assembly constituency was established in 1957 and is one of the six segments under the Bhagalpur Lok Sabha seat. It comprises the Gopalpur, Naugachhia, Rangrachowk and Ismailpur blocks. Throughout the decades, political supremacy has gradually shifted from Congress and CPI to JD(U) which has maintained this seat for nearly two decades.
