Gaya city serves as the administrative hub of Gaya district and the Magadh division in Bihar. Positioned about 116 kilometres to the south of Patna, the state’s capital, Gaya stands as Bihar’s second-largest city. It is encircled on three sides by modest rocky hills, while the Phalgu River flows along its eastern edge.

Renowned for its historical and religious significance, Gaya draws both pilgrims and tourists. It holds sacred importance in Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. Both the Ramayana and Mahabharata mention Gaya, called Gayapuri in the latter. According to legend, Lord Ram visited the place with Sita and Lakshman to perform piṇḍadān for his father, King Dasharath. This ritual for granting moksha to ancestors still makes Gaya a major Hindu pilgrimage site.
