The Darbhanga Assembly constituency (numbered 83) is a general (unreserved) seat in the Darbhanga district of Bihar, falling under the wider Darbhanga Lok Sabha constituency. This constituency, being an important urban-centric seat, covers the area that falls under the Darbhanga Municipal Corporation along with surrounding blocks, and hence, it serves as the most important political hub in the Mithilanchal region. Thus, this constituency has traditionally seen tough electoral fights. The Bharatiya Janata Party is slowly but surely emerging as a constant force here since the last couple of decades, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal gives a strong contest. The BJP candidate won the seat in the high-voltage competition.

In the 2020 Assembly election, the seat was retained by the sitting MLA, Sanjay Saraogi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He secured 84,144 votes and this corresponds to a vote share of 49.32%. Saraogi defeated the runner-up Amar Nath Gami of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by 10,639 votes. The margin was 6.24% & the overall voter turnout for the constituency in this election was about 55.15%.
